Why this edition exists
This is the later, harder-edged Marden. Half the book is a warning: about ambition that has curdled into keeping up appearances, about debt taken on to sustain an impression, about becoming — in his phrase — the servant of other people's eyes. Written in 1919, it reads like a critique of the last ten years.
Part one — the book, made readable
The complete text, rewritten for a modern reader. The argument, the anecdotes and Marden's voice are his; what has gone is the padding.
